'Okanagan Bear hug'
Cab Franc (Gris), Oliver B.C. | A Cab Franc with quiet confidence and all the sentiment of 17 Days by Prince. Winemaker Rajen Toor grew up in the vineyard lifestyle, finding his own path to natural winemaking and helping to convert his family vineyards to organic practices along the way. From a sloping mountain vineyard – in its fourth year of organic transitioning – consisting of deep sand & gravel soils, we get a soft spoken wine with lightly freckled minerality throughout. A Cab Franc that is quick on its feet & similar in colour to a satiny pink cats nose. ‘Dam Mast Qualander’ was allowed to gently go through natural malolactic fermentation in barrel and then rest on full lees for 6 months, feeling like a jovial, Fabergé egg of shimmering texture. We picture a perspiring muskmelon, honeycomb chunk’d shortbread, rambutan cream, crushed pink lady apples, mineral water with a hint-of-a-hint of lime margarita run off & falling sunflower seeds. Raj recommends drinking this beauty with the, “classic, classic, Punjabi dish of the people, Dal Makhani”!
Sauvignon Blanc & Muscat, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia | This zippy, summer heat wave quencher is the result of a ‘match made in heaven’. Two super aromatic grapes - Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat - join hands to jump off a cliff into clear ocean water below (safely, of course!!). Ursa Major is the project of BC rising star Rajen Toor, who grew up around vines at his family’s winery on the Black Sage Bench in the South Okanagan Valley. This is truly a passion project; born out of star gazing and poetry writing, the wines of Ursa Major are nothing short of whimsical and revelatory. Here, equal parts Sauvignon and Muscat are direct pressed together, while a small portion is foot stomped and left to macerate over night, after which it’s added to the direct press juice and co-fermented. There’s a bit of time in stainless steel, a bit of time in (mostly) neutral oak and a lifetime of joy to follow. Tastes like an orange and peach twist creamsicle with a hint of food truck French fries on the beach. It’s basically the perfect summer afternoon, bottled.
Gamay Noir, Oliver B.C. | An innocently-mischievous, campsite-hopping, festival baby. Grown on the deep & warm sands of the Black Sage Bench in Oliver – in its fourth year of organic transitioning – ‘Mirror Mirror’ has crystal fine tannins and warm n’ juicy field berry vibes. The grapes were left macerating for no longer than 3 days, to avoid too much transference of the unavoidable smoke-weighted atmosphere. A beauty & the beast type scenario, as we saw the raging wildfires of 2021 clamber along throughout most of inland British Columbia, yet we receive this dainty & delectable Gamay. A true product of its environment, showing open fire and cast iron seared Passion Flakey & marshmallow fluff sandwiches, fresh dirt floor, elderberry syrup, cherry bomb gum stick, riverside brush & pomelo zest. Drink when you miss living in Vancouver, going for ocean swims twice per week & being able to see all the rascally, mountain ranges on your morning walks.
