An exploration of slope

Werlitsch exists on one stunning, sloped biodynamic vineyard. Ex Vero, latin for ‘from truth’, denotes parcels coming from different parts of the hill. These pure expressions of terroir are a study in tiny variations that make an enormous difference.

‘Ex Vero’ means out of the truth in Latin, a phrasing which big time characterizes Werlitsch winemakers’ Ewald & Brigitte Tscheppe’s holistic approach to winemaking. The grapes used to make Ex Vero I— a blend of Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc— are grown at the lowest point of a hillside slope where soils are dense & clay-based, giving the wine a petrol & gunpowder-driven, low-top Docs-sporting minerality, a badass metallic edge to an otherwise soft-hearted and enveloping wine. Aged for two years in old oak, rich warm caramel notes call to mind a handful of Werther’s Originals scattered across the bottom of your cool aunt’s well-worn Vuitton purse. On the palate, we’ve got candied citrus with a wink of grapefruit skin bitterness, clear, creamy pear & sprawling acidity. Don’t be afraid to stash one in the cellar! Ages as well as a timeless leather handbag.

Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Styria, Austria | An unquestionable white blend that aspires us to greatness & warms the cockles of our hearts. Ewald and Brigitte Tscheppe's farm‚ ’Werlitsch’ enthusiastically began in 2004, and since, they have only travelled deeper and deeper into harmony and a symbiosis like state with nature & their community. ‘Ex Vero’ translates to “out of the truth” in Latin, a fitting sentiment for these world class wonders of natural winemaking. Coming mainly from their vineyard’s middle slope, which has a more even mixture of both Opok (very chalky) and clay soils. FUN FACT! Their wines are divided by soil type, not slope or elevation, though they do synchronize in most cases. Small reduction at first, like a comforting old cigar scented attic, lemon meringue, shell necklace, croissant with apricot preserves & a savoury soul – so delicious it hurts, we could drink this everyday and never tire. Pour alongside naming your first puppy, this wine will inspire & soothe your newfound parental stresses in equal measure.

Sauvignon Blanc & Morillon, Styria, Austria | Welcome to the prismatic & profound wines of Ewald Tscheppe! Part of the wave of Austrian winemakers to embrace biodynamic viticulture—including Gut Oggau, Judith Beck, Claus Preisinger and Andreas Tscheppe, his brother located just across the hill! These zero-zero white wines are some of the most compelling in the world, evocative and endlessly complex. From the highest vineyards with the most exposed bedrock, Ex Vero III was direct pressed into large barrels to develop all the texture and complexity. Like a very cold spring or a very warm fall with a punchy nose of petrol, matchstick and smoke, followed by bruised orchard fruit, grapefruit zest, pomelo pith, rosemary stem & smoked hay on the palate. Car chase rubber marks, pithy meyer lemons, apricot jam, old wooden ladder & a round lactic life preserver secured tightly ‘round the bounding acidity. Dreamy in the extreme, this brilliant & precise wine is too good for the city & is ready for life on the commune.
