A Juicy Swartland Red from Nice People for a Cold Night

LCBO & U! @mullineuxwines Kloof Street, $19.99 sku 460964

This morning we entrusted our lives to google to show us the way to the Italian LCBO specialty store in Woodbridge. We found much magic, which we will compile in a larger post! Too many sogni d'oro for one post!!!! So instead a hint of what is to come on Monday’s WINE SEANCE RAVE!!! WE LOVE SOUTH AFRICA (and they have crazy good natural wine). I mean, it is obviously stupid beautiful. It is also a complicated place. Apartheid ended in 1994. Think of how terrifyingly recent that is. There are great things growing from a hard history.

The South African wine industry was dominated by garbage co-ops forever. When the industry opened it was flooded with corporations taking advantage of cheap labour and most ideal growing conditions (+ views!). After cheap labour came fancy money looking to make big international style wines for big points, which are good but lack soul and a sense of place. We would sell them for a lot of money at our restaurants to punish guests for not using their imagination. :) Over the last 10 years cool shit has happened. Young cool witches and wizards are going back to OG grapes, single varietals and old barrels. Low alcohol, a light hand and taking chances (+ surfing!) #The sunny, sandy soils of Swartland were the epicentre of rad rumblings. In 2010 a bunch of wicked producers banded together to create the Swartland Revolution fighting for real wine from real places without any additives or business man tricks. Now the industry is exploding with the most illustrious treasures.

Andrea and Chris Mullineux are a talented couple who were part of those first spell casters. We were so excited to see the Kloof Street in the Dundas and Dovercourt LCBO!!! Props to that tiny store for having good stuff sometimes! The Kloof is a syrah blend. The winery says it is ‘seductive with notes of violet spice and purple fruit'. We would argue that we are seductive and this wine tastes like rabbit pie, the dried blood of a lost lover, melted wine gums and a fistful of herbs stolen from a Provencal farm. Drink it. #lcboandu#alwayscastingspells
