Aleatico, Lazio, Italy | A wickedly exciting thought that makes your brain tickle & goosebumps rise. If you think rosé season is over you are big time missing out on this savoury thrill, one step over from the light red party. Winemaker Joy Kull, originally from Connecticut, now farms local, old vine grape varietals on 3 hectares of volcanic vines near Rome, in Lazio. Her ‘Rosato’ is crushed by foot & direct pressed into tanks for fermentation. She uses no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers except composted sheep manure (her husband is a shepherd!) to allow the wines to sing of their time & place over anything else. The grape, Aleatico, is known for its aromatic qualities, and hand in making other superb rosatos of Italy. This wine is a clear, delightful and utterly distinct. Candied lemons, flower bushels, raspberry jam, strawberry ring pop, rosemary & red liquorice ropes. Drink on bright autumnal afternoons with BBQ sauced up chicken wings.

Sangiovese, Merlot, Lazio, Italy | Brand new to Ontario, a gift from Italy! Like a secret garden, overflowing with wild flora, fauna & dreams. American winemaker Joy Kull caught the grape bug while working as a sommelier in the U.S., and travelled to Italy to get her hands dirty. The dusty-berried Sangio (80%) & boisterous Merlot (20%) are grown in central Italy, on well-draining, volcanic soils for a mineral flare. Destemmed by hand & fermented (separately) on their skins for about 10 days – in order to see what the grapes do before blending. Drinking from a leather canteen, dark clay dust, high toned red candy meets low toned gravel & savoury earth. Drink while performing your daily sheep herding duties & reflecting on all the choices made that brought you HERE.

Procanico, Lazio, Italy | Like an embroidered linen paint-smock, textured & embracing, with a few smudges of genius leftover from projects passed. American winemaker Joy Kull caught the grape bug while working as a sommelier and swiftly realized her only option was to travel to a faraway land to expand her mind & dirty her hands. The goal of her wines is to be widely tried, easily understood & vastly appreciated. Grown on volcanic soils that add complexity & a ruched, mineral character. 70% of the grapes are crushed by foot and direct pressed, while 30% are macerated for a week to extract supportive and intriguing tannin. Pale n’ rusty gold, with laser-like pithy-lemon acidity, cherry blossoms, peach filling, salty cantaloup & honey-glazed pastry for a balanced wonder. Drink, as your second bottle, on your two-year anniversary – reflecting on how far you’ve come together & envisioning how much farther you will go.
