Pinot Gris, Similkameen Valley, British Columbia
Scout is more than a winery, it’s an entire ecological project, working in tandem with their surroundings to perpetuate a healthy, thriving ecosystem. This intensely aromatic, skin-contact Pinot Gris is a blend of two different sites, the Scout Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley and the Kozier Vineyard in Naramata. The former was de-stemmed into two separate qvevri (clay amphora) and skin-fermented for 14 days and 3 months, while the latter was destemmed into open top fermenters and spontaneously fermented for 7 days on the skins, then pressed into stainless and bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphur. Watermelon agua fresca, orange blossom, Tropicana ‘Tropics’ Orange Peach Mango ®, blood orange Orangina, rhubarb shrub, wild strawberries & a sprig of rosemary in a jug of lemon water. Pair with chimichurri, shrimp ceviche or orange-tinged pork.

It was love at first sight when we tried the wines of Ursa Major, wines that speak to the creativity of British Columbia’s cutting-edge natural wine movement. Rajen Toor was working at Desert Hills before starting Ursa Major as a side project, playing around with so-called regular ‘ole grapes to discover their hidden potential. This light & ethereal skin-contact blend is made of grapes that were vinified separately with a few days of skin contact, blended and aged in barrel for 8 months, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Tastes of nature itself, textured and refreshing with notes of tart green apple, Sunny D, lemon Starburst & pithy pink grapefruit. Literally luminescent like sunlight filtered through sitka spruce & old growth trees, a sign from the universe to drop everything & walk barefoot in the nearest river.

Ah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot! The unofficial grapes of all of our parents, who can’t stop won’t stop ordering them without consulting the wine list first whenever we take them out for dinner. Well, hang on to your hats, Boomers— we take your Bordeaux blend, and we raise you this British Columbian hellcat. Merlot & Cab Sauv grapes undergo two weeks of semi-carbonic maceration before undergoing a 5 month élevage in neutral oak; this year’s Merlot-Cab Sauv has a little extra Merlot thrown in for good measure, making it extra crushable & ripe. This wine is a perfect bridge between the traditional and the contemporary— we’ve all tasted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot a thousand times, and this wine pays homage to their classicism and timelessness with its razor-sharp expression of varietal character. Cab Sauv is as brawny and unsentimental as ever, an overstuffed leather armchair in a room called ‘the library’ with a stag’s head up on the wall, while Merlot does its usual A++ job of combatting Cab Sauv’s kind of mean vibe with its soft, plummy fruit and luscious texture. But ASIA’s reinterpretation of this classique blend is undeniably natty, volatile and meant to be drunk young; drinking it is sort of like looking at a picture of your parents in the seventies and wondering how these two hot badasses grew up to be the same nerds who constantly text you asking for iPad tech support, and will never, as long as they live, be able to wrap their heads around the concept of an emoji.
