Cinsault, Napa Valley, USA
Exclusive to Grape Witches! The Scholium Project is perhaps the very definition of “cult wine,” made by former philosophy professor turned philosopher winemaker, Abe Schoener. The wines are idiosyncratic & experimental, part of the New California wave winemakers embracing all-natural fermentation, light extractions and minimal sulphur usage. Consider this Cinsault by way of Volnay, the iconic Burgundian sub-appellation known for powerfully perfumed & aromatic Pinot Noir, dark & robust with the lightest possible extraction. From 140-year-old vines from the Bechtold Ranch, this was whole-cluster fermented and left alone (without punch-downs or pour-overs) for four weeks, followed by 12 months in neutral oak. Abe considers this cuvée the very pinnacle of this wine, featherweight and lithe, bold and balanced with blackcurrant, savoury portobello umami, clove-adjacent spice & a puff of smoked cedar. Now in its final year, the incredible wines of this project won’t be around for much longer!

Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Merlot, Sonoma Valley, USA
Fresh from California’s new wave of young winemakers comes this light-hearted and light-ABV take on big bruiser Cali Cab Sauv, absolutely no relation to the over-extracted, Bordeaux-inspired heavyweights of yore! From a number of dry-farmed, organic vineyards, each parcel was destemmed and vinified separately (some as rosé!) at low temperatures, followed by 9 months in neutral oak and bottling without fining or filtration. Bright, fleshy red fruit meets dark, savoury fruit with a spicy, earthy undertone: dark cherry, blackcurrant, cowboy leather, mocha martini. Give this to your Big Red diehards & watch them fall in love.

Petite Sirah, Zinfandel & Nero d’Avola, Mendocino County, USA
Lighter than previous vintages in body, mind AND spirit, this breezy summer red is your chillable poolside angel, adultified CapriSun, the switched-on lovechild of a blue freezie & can of Beach Plum Lacroix. All three grapes in the blend were fermented separately in small batches (whole cluster for the Zin and Petite, destemmed for the Nero), then pressed & barrel-aged for 6 months off lees. Accounting for 40% of the blend, Petite Sirah is the star of the show here, carbonically-macerated and replete with maximum blueberry energy, though not without a moody dash of black pepper like a well-placed slow jam in a sea of summer bangers. Zin is always here for a good time, bringing juicy bright fruit like a cannonball swimming pool splash, with worldly Nero d’Avola adding a touch of sophistication to the blend. The Mendocino Benchlands red is inspired by the Italian farming tradition of grapes being planted on the poorer, uplifted soils of a given valley, with the rich valley floor soils reserved for vegetables— all the vineyards in this blend planted on those uplifted benchlands. This is a wine that feels very easy to coexist with— throw a bottle in your favourite tote bag, kick your shoes off, be like, “the only rule of today is that THERE ARE NO RULES” & see where Mendocino Benchlands takes you!
