If you're looking for a lil level up in your Gamay game, look no further than this duo of iconic Morgon's and a complex Beaujolais-Villages from a rising star.

Gamay, Beaujolais, France | If there was ever a single wine that encompasses Beaujolais’ past, present and future, this is undoubtedly it, a real OG! It was Mathieu and Camille Lapierre’s father, Marcel, who alongside some legendary, like-minded winemakers – Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Jean Foillard, dubbed the Gang of Four – popularized many of the natural wine practices seen around the world today. After Marcel’s passing in 2010, his children have taken the torch and really run with it, introducing biodynamic principles and cementing this wine’s status as one of the greatest French wines of all time. And if you’ve never had Morgon before, you’re in for a treat! Powerful is one word for it, transcendent is another. Ripe, lustrous and vast, nearly Pinot Noir but undeniably Gamay, a giant with a gentle touch. Pretty little red fruits, rubbed rose, turned earth, hard gravel, soft graphite, Marc Jacobs’ Daisy & horsehair tannins. Perfect for anniversaries & spoiling yourself rotten, which are not mutually exclusive.

Gamay, Beaujolais, France | If the name’s unfamiliar, know that Guy Breton is a living legend in Beaujolais, one of the Gang of Four – including Lapierre, Thévenet and Foillard – to popularize natural winemaking principles around the world. Sourced from two parcels handed down by his grandfather (30 and 100 years old!), the grapes come from hills between the Côte de Brouilly and the Côte du Py, around the village of Régnié-Durette. Like many of his wines, the winemaking sounds suspiciously simple but belies incredible results — wild yeasts, whole cluster fermentations, old oak from Romanée-Conti, no fining or filtration. Fresher than the Morgons of his contemporaries, Régnié embraces its luscious, ripe fruit without abandon, lifted and aromatic with slightly unripe cherry, the softest of florals and a clean, fresh finish with a slightly natty twist. Devastating and delightfully casual, pair with miso black cod on celeric purée, or simply drink on its own (with a spirited decant!) with your dog on the couch.

Gamay, Beaujolais, France | Jean-Claude Lapalu is a living legend in Beaujolais, a grape grower who became a shining star of the natural wine scene in France. Like many other farmers, he sold his grapes to the local cooperative before deciding to bottle his own wines, quickly gaining renown for their density and complex profiles. True to word, this is a sophisticated, intellectual Gamay, like something Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen would design for The Row. Organically farmed with biodynamic practices, aged 5-6 months in tank and bottled without fining or filtration. Dark-fruited and brooding but with a distinct freshness –smoked cherry, red liquorice, dark chocolate, saddle leather & hand-rolled cigarette are wrapped up tight with supple, savoury tannins. Effortlessly complex and drinkable, this wine never disappoints – pair with rack of lamb & lightly poached lake trout.
