Simply the most hype of all hype wines, ‘Brutal’ wines are zero/zero wines—nothing added, nothing taken away, as in no sulphites, additives, fining or filtration—made by a handful of super casually world-famous natural winemakers. Highly allocated and widely coveted, these experimental cult favourites are peppered in the windows of wine shops around the world and feature some of thee biggest names in natural wine. Gut Oggau’s iteration centres on the grape Roesler, a cross between Zweigelt, Seyve Villard and Blaufränkisch named after the former director of Austria’s oldest viticultural college. The grape itself has tons of colour and tannins but here the juice spends just a few hours on the skins. Not quite a rosé but not quite a red, this is subtle and robust, energetic and highkey explosive, mouthwatering and textural, slightly funky, wildberries frozen on the bush, umami centrifuged out of a tomato, layers upon layers of rich duchess satin and practically radiating with energy.
