Seemingly spun out of moonlight, this twinkle-toed Chenin Blanc is a true joy to experience, a real diamond in the rough! Except that there’s nothing rough about this polished, opulent white from famed Anjou winery Clau de Nell, a project of the late winemaking legend Anne-Claude Leflaive, a Burgundian who made it her mission to support biodynamic winemakers across France. Anne-Claude was especially gifted with Chardonnay and always aspired to make a great white at Clau de Nell, but tragically passed before that became a reality so call this a swan song of sorts – proud, majestic and won't take a lick of shit. Gently pressed whole clusters undergo a slow, cold fermentation with wild yeasts in old Burgundy barrels, where they rest for a year before another 6 months of aging in stainless steel vats. A chalky, glistening moonrock minerality meets earthly flavours of lemon curd, quince skin & the softest whiff of oak with filigreed tannins, tense Burgundian acid and a creamy, saline finish. Decant to discover, loves! Pair with Madonna-inspired white suits and phone numbers scribbled on the back of receipts.
Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc | Fall backwards into this deep, dark red blend that ripples across the night sky! Clau de Nell is the passion project of the late & great Anne-Claude Leflaive, a Burgundian winemaker who not only advocated for French biodynamic winegrowers abroad, but rescued a near-bankrupt winery in Anjou, complete with hundred year old vines and an ancient, limestone-carved cellar. Two-thirds 45 year old Cab Franc, one-third 70 year old Cab Sauv & six months in oak – a dark, twisted fantasy of a rich, full-bodied red with all the bells and whistles. Black forest filling, crunchy loam, savoury spice, cowhide, kumquat acid & smoky tannins with a touch of cigarillo and dried eucalyptus on the finish. Scrumptious, sly and more than a bit seductive, pair this with fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight & never running from a real fight.
An audacious and soulful Cab Franc for the ages! The late Anne-Claude Leflaive was a legend in Puligny-Montrachet, on a quest to support young, biodynamic winemakers across France until she came across this abandoned winery in Anjou, full of old vines with untapped potential. Along with her husband, Christian Jacques, she purchased the estate and hired Sylvain Potin as head winemaker, entrusting him to bring her vision of vibrant, biodynamic reds to life. From 45 year old vines, the destemmed grapes were fermented for a month, aged in a combination of used Burgundy casks, steel vat and new oak for 18 months, and bottled without fining or filtration. Chiselled & heady, piquant in profile and personality and fruited like a backpack of smushed cherries and blueberries. Bell pepper, brown leather, dirty cobblestone, savoury-smoky-spicy tannins & the smell of grinding a pencil with those old-school wall sharpeners. Pair with kitchen sink stews and scratch lotto tickets.
