Carinyena (Carignan), Catalonia, Spain
The extremely hawt single parent, who does everything from fermenting kimchi to owning a bespoke clothing brand to being a trained salsa dancer. Truly sensational. The vineyards are deeply loved, fertilized and grazed upon by their sheep, plowed by their horse Ringo, pollinated by their bee hives & treated with biodynamic principles. Compassionate winemaker Manel harvests the Carinyena from vines planted by his grandfather in the 1930s, before they are fermented in a mixture of amphora (underground clay pot), barrel and foudre (extra big wooden vat) – before 18-24 months resting and further developing their nuanced features. A distinctive blend of vine age, Mediterranean climate and the ability to significantly rest their wines, shows a story that is singularly their own and a focal point when looking at natural Spanish winemaking. Their family estate is huddled tightly by the surrounding Mediterranean forest and sits on mineral rich, sandy calcareous soils for a dense through line of pure oceanic minerality. Pale plums, worn leather, crab apple jam, zippy wild raspberries, buckwheat honey, with some chalky kisses & thyme underbrush for a fine tannic finish we wish would NEVER end. We cannot possibly imagine a wrong time or place to drink this, choose your own adventure.
