Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

Back for its second iteration, a libra-esque rotburger to write home about. Since 2017, A Sunday in August has steadily become one of the most well known and cherished, low-intervention wineries in British Columbia. They source the highest quality, organic and biodynamic local fruit and do as little as possible to it. FUN FACT! Only 50 cases of this juicy gem were made this year, so slurp it up while you can! From a single vineyard in Peachland, BC, the tart rotburger sees three days of aromatically-enlivening semi-carbonic maceration. One of the winery’s favourite cuvées from this year, packed with homemade raspberry jam, milled black pepper, pretty graham crackers on a doily, sour red jolly rancher & a balance between earthy darkness and sunrise highlights. Enjoy with flank steak & many buttered rolls.

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

For lovers of playing fetch and drying your own apple rings, whose fave Mario Bros character is Princess Peach. Winemaker Mike Schindler began A Sunday in August in 2017 with a love and commitment to fermenting electrifying & low intervention wines. Swiftly developing a devoted following, especially in the BC wine community, their fan base is now bigger than ever. From a single vineyard in Peachland, BC (yes, that’s the town’s real name, and yes, they grow peaches), the organic and savoury pinot is semi-carbonically macerated for 14 days to really amp up the JUICE factor and heighten the already rampant aromatics. Brambly raspberry, shoots of strawberry, intertwined, elegant tannins & lusty acidity, perfect for end of the season picnics. Plus can we talk about this literally perfect label from Mike's partner — at the winery and in life — Sam's sister, brilliant Canadian artist Claire Milbrath.

Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia

A brand new, shadowy red from some of our west-coast besties. Since 2017, A Sunday in August has steadily become one of the most well known and cherished, low-intervention wineries in British Columbia. ‘Cabernet OK’ is affectionately named so as the little community the fruit came from is called Okanagan Falls, but more commonly referred to as ‘OK Falls’. A more serious departure from their typical, west-coast glu-glu style of winemaking, this co-ferment of dense cab sauv and herbal merlot sees 10 days of semi-carbonic maceration to balance structure, depth & quaff-ability. Wild blackberries, black cherries, black currants, cool minerality, snippets of cassis & a dash of peppery spice. Enjoy in your fave sequinned onesie while doing the boogie!

Ortega, Foch, Pinot Noir & Léon Millot, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

The perfect companion for taking a trip to Tofino, watching a pod of orcas & chowing down on a tuna burrito from Tacofino (it’s an off menu TREAT). Since 2017, A Sunday in August has steadily become one of the most well known and cherished, low-intervention wineries in British Columbia. Their support of small-scale, organic and biodynamic Okanagan farmers is admirable to say the least, and they have since extended their reach by stetting up shop and starting their new winery on Salt Spring Island. ‘Island Vibes’ is a classic Vancouver Island assortment of grapes, coming from the Saanich Peninsula, with flowery ortega, earthy foch, cherried pinot noir & concentrated léon millot. Everything is co-fermented and sees seven days of semi-carbonic maceration, encouraging this light and lifted fresh red to soar. FUN FACT! Island vineyards of BC are often extremely well stocked with cold-hardy, fungal-resistant & delicious hybrids due to the areas stunning and saturated designation as a temperate rainforest! Red cherries purchased from the side of an arid dessert road in Osoyoos, fresh-picked raspberries, strawberry cordial, floral centrepiece, chillaxing tannins & a smooth acidity following the fruit around like a puppy follows its mamma. Enjoy ultra-chilled out of your fave thermos, while skipping stones into the Pacific

Pinot Gris & Gewürztraminer, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada

As anyone who has ever worked at a wine bar knows, this is basically a perfect orange wine that makes people lose their goddamn minds. Their signature skin contact blend is mostly Pinot Gris with a splash of Gewürztraminer for a bit of floral lift. Grapes are destemmed and undergo whole-berry carbonic maceration for five days which gives us bangin’ & pronounced citrus flavours that aren’t here to mess around. Bold, proud and bursting with energy, flamingo orange-pink & endlessly Instagrammable, unfined & unfiltered with minimal sulphur. Honeydew Sour Patch Kid (which isn’t a thing but it should be!), rosewater-infused Fresca, blood orange, jalapeño white tea. We’re looking at a fresh & jubilant sidekick who does indeed manage to conjure up the carefree vibes of a Sunday in August but at heart, transcends any day or week or month, it’s simply perfect any time. Smash it year-round & scream for joy.
