Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris & friends, Cahors, France
This biodynamic white blend from Fabien Jouves in Southern France is a one-way ticket to Flavourtown and even if we’re unclear on how much Guy Fieri even likes wine, we’re confident that he’d appreciate this rip roarin’ tailgate party in a bottle. This club has everything: a luscious, honeyed texture, lip-smacking acid, a bouquet of freshly liberated wildflowers from a rich neighbour’s bee-friendly garden & Starburst lemon citrus. She’s already on the guest list, just come on through to the back.
Riesling, Alsace, France
This family-owned winery is led by Yann Durrmann, son to André and Anna Durrmann, who started the winery from scratch in 1979 and were among the first in the area to go organic. Yann uses integrated agriculture to fight the effects of climate change & maintain freshness in his wines, never manipulating the juice & often bottling without sulphur. A touch rounder than the Schistes, think honeysuckle, green apple, lime zest, pink peppercorns & a whiff of iridescent minerality. Pair with bratwürst and sauerkraut to launch you on your everything-goes-with-Riesling journey!
Devín, Trnava, Slovakia
Agnes Lovecka and Katarina Kuropkova of Slobodné Vinárstvo are shining stars of the biodynamic wine scene in Slovakia, known first and foremost for their meticulously crafted wines but also for the incredible story behind their winery. Formerly a tobacco farm, the century-old farm was repossessed and abandoned by the government until it was reclaimed by the family and eventually converted to biodynamics. Made from Devín, a cross between Roter Veltliner and Gewurztraminer, Devina is semi-carbonically fermented with 10 days on the skins in ovoid, a porous egg-shaped vessel that allows for microoxidation. This is juicy, textured & aromatic — elegantly twisted tangerine zest, lemon-limeade, peach yogurt, Swiss mineral water, bitter almond & a whiff of orange blossom with a Thai basil & raw fennel finish. Hits you like a “BAM!” from Emeril Lagasse in the best way possible with an extra tongue pop for good measure.
