If you remember Violet from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you’ll remember her as the rude, brash girl (we relate!) who unwisely decides to eat Willy Wonka’s “three-course dinner” gum – pea soup, roast beef & blueberry ice cream, all in one! – which inflates her into a giant, blue-faced blueberry. When the Oompa Loompas rolled her off to the juicing room, this must’ve been what they extracted – a wildly juicy & Willy Wonka purple wine that’s a touch vegetal, a bit meaty and has a whiff of blueberry ice cream! Blame it on the Brand Bros, a pair of fifth-generation winemakers working out of the northern end of Pfalz, Germany. Sourced from 60 year old vines on a prized limestone plot and named after Flora, the horse who worked said plot, a variety of techniques – extended open-top fermentation, carbonic maceration, throwing some of last years’s vintage in – come together to create an entire Aesop’s Fable’s worth of feelings and fantasy, all without fining, filtration or added sulphites. Welch’s grape juice meets coronation grape jelly, jasmine flower, Italian plums, wet cobblestones & charcuterie board (board included!) with soft, ripe tannins and a funky floral kick. Might just slap a big silly Cheshire Cat grin on your face.
A lean and refreshing skin-contact stunner from longtime fan faves, the Brand Bros! ‘Pur’ translates to ‘pure, neat and sheer,’ a perfect framing for Daniel and Jonas’ explorations into zero-sulphur winemaking, which feel less like experiments and more like manifestos on the wind, the sun and of course, modern winemaking at its most cutting edge. From 40 year old vines, the grapes are whole bunch fermented for 4 days, then aged in barrel and bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphur. Long-legged but not in the wine sense with lifted aromatics, tart, tropical fruit & striking, high acid. Tangerine peel in a single, perfect spiral, pear skin, herb stem, preserved lemon, lime pith, peach pit, gym chalk & a slightly bitter, tannic finish. A triple threat of minerality, crispness and freshness that simply can’t be denied! Pair with an entire day of lo-fi hip-hop on loop & a potluck of snacks from the convenience store.
We’re head over heels for this unbridled & unsulphured Pinot Noir from the Brand Bros, a pair of winemaking brothers at the very northern end of Pfalz, Germany, in the city of Bockenheim. This rare & strangely rich red smoulders like Marlon Brando (Brand Bro?) in all of his charismatic glory, a potent combination of being conventionally attractive – look within & you’ll find the prim & pretty Pinot you’re looking for – with a queer, subversive bent. Farmed from organic vines up to 40 years old, this was aged for 8 months in 500L barrels – called halbstück in Pfalz – and bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphur. Salted florals, musky perfume & scorched earth meet cranberry juice, blueberry lipstick, berry shortbread & a whiff of bacon fat in a show-stopping Almodovar-esque package. Aesthetically along the lines of Billy Idol’s White Wedding and Marc Jacobs’ infamous Grunge collection, it feels like you could somehow drink this in a dive bar and get away with it. Like finding love in a mosh pit, savour within the night.
A wildly symphonic Pinot Noir appears! Making it’s Ontario debut is this rare, holy grail red. Sourced from 40 year old vines from their Heiligenkirche vineyard, the grapes were wild fermented and aged in barrel, then bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphites. Broad and ripe on the nose with dark, juicy fruit and a touch of musk, this is Pinot by way of Beauty and the Beast — brambly red fruit, evening dew, salted florals, enchanted roses, dusty libraries, muddy brown boots straight out of the saddle & damp, earthy tannins. Pair with lamb korma, long gallops at night and orchestral renditions of The Cure.
New to Ontario! From fifth-generation winemaking brothers Daniel and Jonas Brand comes this rare, single-varietal Cabernet Franc – a real rarity in Germany and especially in Riesling-obsessed Pfalz! For this top cuvée, the Brand Bros are working with an early-ripening variant which clocks in at an unsuspecting 12% ABV, completely unbefitting its wild, tenacious personality! Like the entire arc of Little Red Riding Hood, this skips through the forest with a basket of summer fruits and herbs but later, bares its teeth as the conniving wolf, all dark, earthy spice with a side of smoked bacon like a Northern Rhône Syrah gone buck. Smells exactly like the inside of famed Kensington Market spice store, Carlo’s House of Spice while being herbal, juicy & meaty all at once. Blackberry seed, white pepper, prosciutto & pine needles with faint whiffs of graphite, eucalyptus and a slight greenish tint. The acid growls but purrs, while the ethereal, complex finish keeps us coming back for more. Utter magic with a healthy dose of reality.
