Light-Weight Wild Reds
Light-Weight Wild Reds
Zweigelt & St. Laurent, Burgenland, Austria
Rét is one of those wines that we come back to time and time again, like a favourite book or movie that is ALWAYS as good as you remember. On the one hand, it is so utterly crushable that you will be tempted to dump the whole bottle into a fountain soda cup & honestly why shouldn’t you? At first it’s all cran-cherry fruit & cola spritz. But upon further inspection, you’ll find it has an equally strong serious streak, like when you find out your wildest, party-est friend secretly as a degree in, like, quantum physics. Earthy, smoky & black peppery, Rét is like the smell of the month of October exploded into a wine. Crackling dried leaves & outdoor firepit, clear & crisp & romantic. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented on the skins for about 10 days without temperature control, then pressed & aged in acacia barrels on gross lees for 14 months. Pairs perfectly with: classic Burberry plaid, an impromptu game of softball that becomes weirdly high-stakes weirdly quickly, cool breezes & hand-holding, going for a run with a dog.
Pinot Noir & Blauer Portugieser, Pfalz, Germany
From natural wine heartthrobs and fifth-generation winemakers Daniel and Jonas Brand comes this Goth-y and romantic rosé that will do all kinds of crazy things to your heart. It may flutter, it may pound, it may straight-up stop. You may find yourself writing this rosé a love letter, or trying to deliver it a bouquet of dead roses in the driving rain. It’s a completely normal reaction to drinking this wine. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Saperavi, Igoeti, Georgia
This sassy light-bodied red drinks like a Beaujolais for people who have read Infinite Jest. Tough as nails Saperavi grapes thrive in the cool and breezy Georgian region of Khashmi, whose clay and limestone soils give the wine a brisk minerality that feels like waking up refreshed and rarin’-to-go after a much-needed catnap. With its savoury, earthy notes of red beet and fresh tarragon, Nita is evocative of the first, very-earliest days of spring, when the world is still kind of muddy and grey but the scent of fresh green is in the air and everyone has a skip in their step full of post-winter hope. Semi-carbonic maceration and fermentation in quevri (which helps preserve the purity of the fruit) gives Nita its Beauj-adjacent glow, with bright sapy flavours of wild strawberry, seedy raspberry and tart red cherry. Drink while wearing horn-rimmed tortoiseshell reading glasses on a late winter Sunday for maximum experiential impact. Enjoy lightly chilled!
