Sauvignon Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Loire Valley, France | You know, Sauvignon Blanc is a really great friend to other grapes and this pairing with Ugni Blanc is revelatory in its ability to balance wonderful concentration with fresh minerality. Laurent Saillard is one of our favourite humans - an incredibly talented former chef come winemaker who cooks you dinner and waits ‘till midnight to wish you a happy birthday since you just happed to mention it over cheese. He’s all heart and perseverance - travelling south after an incredibly devastating vintage in 2021 to buy grapes from other trusted farmers in an effort to support what little he had left of his own fruit. In this cuvée, the Sauvignon Blanc came from a friend in nearby Loire et Cher while the Ugni Blanc was sourced more than 6 hours away in Vaucluse. Vinified separately and blended before bottling, it’s like they were always meant to be together, twins separated at birth. A field of baby’s breath and sun kissed yellow fruits on buttery, almond frangipane. All washed down with salted rim Paloma. Pure magic.
Cabernet Franc, Pineau d’Aunis & Chenin Blanc, Loire Valley, France | A rare and lucky love triangle, as could only be concocted in the Loire valley’s Saumur region. From winemakers Emeline Calvez and Sebastien Bobinet we are gifted this organic and youthful Cab Franc, Pineau d’Aunis & Chenin blend. A mix of direct pressing and maceration concocts a vibrant, greedy nose and striking colour – imagine if Pantone had a colour called ‘blushing candy lobster’. The ‘Piak! rosé’ is serving salted raspberry sorbet, crunchy Fuji apple skins, grapefruit mint leaves, cherry taffy pull & watermelon juice squeezed on acacia wood. ‘Piak! rosé’ is ready and waiting to run with you through the brambly forest bushes and cannonball naked into a bottomless country pond. Cheers to you both.
Gamay, Beaujolais, France | This may just be the manic pixie dream girl of fresh red wines - a touch mysterious, effortlessly cool, and really pretty?? Like playing a game of chess in the park with a hot stranger (the NYC meet-cute of our dreams?) this contemplative and at times complicated wine is incredibly drinkable and super juicy. Bright red cherry, strawberry and raspberry gets a little freaky with earthy leather and umami notes. Organically farmed, whole cluster fermented and spontaneously and carbonically fermented with a teeny tiny touch of sulphur. A gateway Beaujolais made by a Loire legend to introduce you to the coolest bands and restaurants, AND you like their friends? Wow.
