Nero d’Avola, Sicily, Italy | COS is undoubtedly a benchmark in natural Italian winemaking, a project born in the 80s when three dudes with impressive last names —Cilia, Occhipinti and Strano, get it... COS — came together to fool around with grapes from their parent's vineyards. What began as a humble project, became one of the world's most iconic wineries, revolutionizing quality wine production in Sicily and inspiring the next generation of producers to question the harmful sprays and manipulation they were taught was right in winemaking school. That cheeky streak runs through all of their wines, even here in what should be a buttoned-up, classically savoury Nero d’Avola but is actually a super-fresh take on a dark, brooding red without sacrificing any of that characteristic presence. Aged in concrete, that rich, velvety dark fruit is right at the forefront, alongside anise, dried oregano, white Alba truffles, fired earth & hand-rolled cigars with a slight citrus zing & lengthy tannins. Something grand for your biggest family dinners, pour this for your grandmother at the head of the table, who probably cooked everything (or at least, tried to). Truly one of our favourite producers ever.

Sebastopol, USA | Few wines speak to California’s natural wine revolution as well as this full & sultry red from Martha Stoumen, a leader in low intervention winemaking. Martha often worked with Nero d’Avola during her time at COS in Sicily, a grape known for producing a deep, dark wine with a core of savoury black fruit. When done with a deft hand, Nero d’Avola can reach new heights of elegance, like an oxblood mink on a hot summer’s night, impossibly plush and rich. This blackberry beauty was built for the cellar, structured for the shelf & demands to be drunk right now, especially if you’re in the mood for immediate gratification. Acid shines bright like a streetlamp on an empty, suburban street at night, where the thrill of teenage shenanigans puts a spring in your step. Destemmed and fermented in tank, then aged in barrel for 30 months and bottled without fining or filtration. Dark, forest fruit and black plum skin, blackberry stain on a white t-shirt, smushed cherry, dark cocoa, tomato leaf, plump & dusty florals & tarragon stem tannins. Discover with a decant and pair with hedonists, hot girls & an indie sleaze moment of your very own.
