New Cali Dreaming
New Cali Dreaming
Sebastopol, USA | Few wines speak to California’s natural wine revolution as well as this full & sultry red from Martha Stoumen, a leader in low intervention winemaking. Martha often worked with Nero d’Avola during her time at COS in Sicily, a grape known for producing a deep, dark wine with a core of savoury black fruit. When done with a deft hand, Nero d’Avola can reach new heights of elegance, like an oxblood mink on a hot summer’s night, impossibly plush and rich. This blackberry beauty was built for the cellar, structured for the shelf & demands to be drunk right now, especially if you’re in the mood for immediate gratification. Acid shines bright like a streetlamp on an empty, suburban street at night, where the thrill of teenage shenanigans puts a spring in your step. Destemmed and fermented in tank, then aged in barrel for 30 months and bottled without fining or filtration. Dark, forest fruit and black plum skin, blackberry stain on a white t-shirt, smushed cherry, dark cocoa, tomato leaf, plump & dusty florals & tarragon stem tannins. Discover with a decant and pair with hedonists, hot girls & an indie sleaze moment of your very own.
Santa Barbara, California | As you may have gathered, this wine exists as a tribute to winemaker Angela Osborne’s grandmother and what a tribute — as soon as we tasted we knew we had to have it. Angela was set out to be a filmmaker in her homeland of New Zealand, she couldn’t resist the opportunity to move to California and explore wine and all of its incredible stories. Now, Angela has fallen deeply in love with Grenache, and we have fallen deeply in love with this pale pink and deeply beauty produced from her biodynamic and sustainably farmed grapes. A real thirst-quencher, this rosé is looking for some spicy salty apps to kick off the evening. Watermelon slushy with a salt rim, mineral and saline sparkle and lots of stone fruit. Sure to be crushed amongst crushes.
Mendocino County, USA | While winemakers Shaunt Oungoulian & Diego Roig, make wines for Les Lunes by farming older & historic leased vineyards in Napa & Sonoma, their Populis project is made using purchased grapes from historic vineyards & multi-generational growers in Mendocino County, located just north of Sonoma. Their production facility is located in the basement of Shaunt’s parents’ house, allowing them space free from other wineries’ yeasts / influence as well as space to age multiple vintages if they deem it necessary before release. This single-varietal old-vines Sauvignon Blanc is without a doubt the most chilled out Sauvy B you’ve ever tasted, vinified from grapes planted in the late 1940s! So old & wise, thankfully well past their early-20s need to be all loud & elderflower-passionfruit-green pepper in your face. The green pepper has softened into a fluttering grassiness, and fruit flavours are lightly tropical: guava, key lime & lemon balm. Satin-y mouthfeel, Central Loire-esque, the smell of Dove soap on a loved one’s skin. Make a wish on a dandelion & pair with acoustic guitar strum on a late spring afternoon.
