Carignan & Zinfandel, Sebastopol, USA | Martha Stoumen encountered California’s classic red grape, Zinfandel, while working as the assistant winemaker at Broc Cellars. Along with Carignan, the two achieve a perfect balance: Zin brings body, spice and brambly red fruit while Carignan provides bright acid, savoury depth and raspy tannins. A yin-yang situation in full effect! Fermented & aged in tank for 6 months before being bottled without fining or filtration, Martha brings freshness to the forefront of this light-hearted take on the big California red. In A newfound classic with an extra-drinkable twist! Reigning champ in the light, chillable red department, the hostess with mostest— cranberry cocktail, hibiscus agua fresca, fennel frond, pomegranate pulp, orange peel, blueberry pie & a cinnamon cherry cola finish. Pair with Spicy 103 FM and your most dangerous Daisy Dukes.
2018, Calaveras County, USA | Do you believe in love? We do, and so does this light-hearted Grenache with its heart on its sleeve and its head in the clouds, courtesy of Northern California star, Forlorn Hope. Pouring a surprisingly pale colour, this bright, sapid red reveals a refreshing side of Grenache with age, done in swaths of dark fruit and savoury forest flavours. Grown on the Rorick Heritage Vineyard on schist and dolomite-rich limestone, the grapes were fermented for three weeks in open-top fermenters and aged for 16 months in neutral oak barriques. Juicy, fresh and smells like chocolate-covered blueberries on a cedar plank, intriguing like the best things in life. Fresh blackberry, elderberry cordial, pine needle, tomato stem & raspberry leaf with a firm tannic grip and lip-smacking acid. With just 212 cases produced, this is a pleasure most fleeting! Put a slight chill on it and pair with anything grilled, a cheeky cig & sunglasses at night.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Merlot, Sonoma Valley, USA | Fresh from California’s new wave of young winemakers comes this light-hearted and light-ABV take on big bruiser Cali Cab Sauv, absolutely no relation to the over-extracted, Bordeaux-inspired heavyweights of yore! From a number of dry-farmed, organic vineyards, each parcel was destemmed and vinified separately (some as rosé!) at low temperatures, followed by 9 months in neutral oak and bottling without fining or filtration. Bright, fleshy red fruit meets dark, savoury fruit with a spicy, earthy undertone: dark cherry, blackcurrant, cowboy leather, mocha martini. Give this to your Big Red diehards & watch them fall in love.
