Mendocino County
While winemakers Shaunt Oungoulian & Diego Roig, make wines for Les Lunes by farming older & historic leased vineyards in Napa & Sonoma, their Populis project is made using purchased grapes from historic vineyards & multi-generational growers in Mendocino County, located just north of Sonoma. Their production facility is located in the basement of Shaunt’s parents’ house, allowing them space free from other wineries’ yeasts / influence as well as space to age multiple vintages if they deem it necessary before release. This single-varietal old-vines Sauvignon Blanc is without a doubt the most chilled out Sauvy B you’ve ever tasted, vinified from grapes planted in the late 1940s! So old & wise, thankfully well past their early-20s need to be all loud & elderflower-passionfruit-green pepper in your face. The green pepper has softened into a fluttering grassiness, and fruit flavours are lightly tropical: guava, key lime & lemon balm. Satin-y mouthfeel, Central Loire-esque, the smell of Dove soap on a loved one’s skin. Make a wish on a dandelion & pair with acoustic guitar strum on a late spring afternoon.

Verdelho, Chardonnay, Riesling & Friends, Sierra Foothills
Forlorn Hope’s Queen of the Sierra wines are their entry-level estate wines, which is literally insane because if they were any other producer’s top tier we would accept it in a heartbeat. It’s sort of like when Lou Reed said “My week beats your year”— Forlorn Hope’s entry level beats your premier cru. The white is a blend of native Portuguese grape Verdelho, familiar faces Chardonnay & Riesling & a handful of other German/Alsatian varietals; Verdelho & Riesling were foot-trod before co-fermenting in tank, meanwhile Chard was on its own journey, whole-cluster pressed and aged in neutral oak. The end result is a sunlit good mood daydream of a wine, a wine to drink on a day when you woke up on the right side of the bed, then immediately checked your phone to see that you received an extremely cute text from your crush! There are so many lovable facets to this wine but texturally is where it really sets itself apart from the pack: silky, unctuous & glacé, like a Jolly Rancher made of sunlight. Fruit flavours are tropical but tranquil: pineapple sorbet, soft papaya, clementine mist, ripe white peach. Restrained citrus & a subdued mineral backbone from the limestone & schist soils of FH’s Rorick Heritage Vineyard keep the tropical blowout in check. Unfiltered & unfined with minimal sulfur, this wine is honest, pure & charismatic. Drink while listening to all the songs from your childhood you most want to sing along to, unabashedly & who cares if you’re out of tune? Not Queen of the Sierra, that’s for sure.

Sémillon, Napa Valley
The name Nacré means mother-of-pearl represents the wine’s affinity for pairing with oysters, but also nails the smooth, opalescent texture of Semillon. Known for its waxy, unctuous mouthfeel, rich & ripe fruit, & honeyed aromas, it is luxurious in every way, like sleeping in satin pyjamas underneath satin bedsheets moments after bathing in a million skin-softening bath oils & slathering your entire body in Crème de la Mer (just like J-Lo). Grown in the heart of the Napa Valley, Nacré spent five years aging in bottle before release, now drinking remarkably fresh at press time (probably thanks to all that Crème de la Mer) & no doubt has at LEAST another decade of aging in it (cute experiment if you are extremely patient: grab three bottles, one to drink now, one to drink in five years, & one to drink in ten). Vanilla bean, chamomile, beeswax candle, fennel hit of springtime green. The fanciest pina colada made with all-natural ingredients at a chichi cocktail bar. Decant, please!
