Concord, Niagara, Ontario | For all our talk about regional grapes from around the world, we hardly talk about one of the grape-iest grape of them all: the Concord! Once the backbone of Ontario’s wine industry, this winter-hardy grape was grown for over 150 years until it fell out of favour as wines from California and Europe entered the market. But comebacks are all the rage right now and this scruffy pet-nat reminds us that great things DO grow in Ontario! Sourced from the Lipsitt Vineyard in Niagara, these difficult-to-process grapes undergo several long pressings before being wild fermented to dryness and bottled with unfermented juice to kickstart fermentation in the bottle. Tart, wildberry acid, extra-juicy Welch’s fruit, berry crumble, Fruitsations gummies & a touch of earthy funk = the best take on purple Crush we’ve ever had.
Similkameen Valley, Canada | It takes a village to make a wine this compelling, a perfectly moody but sassy ‘lil firecracker in purple lipstick. From one of the most cutting edge natural wine projects in Canada, this Syrah was spontaneously fermented for 7-21 days on the skins & gently pressed into clay amphora qvevri for 7 months on the lees, then bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphites, resulting in a wine that is absolutely brimming with vitality and maybe just a hint of spritz. Notes of spicy blackcurrant, purple freezie, Welch’s grape juice, powdered potpourri & waxy citrus with a savoury, berry finish like a warm rhubarb crumble. Wrap yourself in the fuzziest wool blanket you own & drink this for a fun, textural pairing.
Also available in the Scout Trio mixed pack.
Halifax, Nova Scotia | Sourwood focuses on making raw, unfiltered cider using 100% Nova Scotian apples! They experiment with adding fruit and hops, which bring unexpected textures, flavours & body to their ciders. A blend of apples and grapes hand-picked in Nova Scotia! Balancing out the acidity of frontenac gris with plush organic apples, they are doing their best to push the boundaries of fruit wine while still creating something delicious. Frontenac gris is a pink-berried mutation of Frontenac, a cold-hardy hybrid variety that is said to yield grey fruit and amber coloured juice. The Ida red apple is generally considered to be both sweetly tart and juicy. Together, they equal DELICIOUS. Drink when you are missing your family’s secret apple pie recipe.
