A juicy and giving red field-blend from one of South Africa’s most dynamic producers. Wine is often in our blood ;), but not always in our genetics. Cousins and winemakers Adi and Hein both have strong calls to the region with grape-growing fathers and a grandfather who once directed South Africa’s oldest winery, Groot Constantia. Since 2008, Adi and Hein began recuperating Kalmoesfontein, an unkempt vineyard from the 1930s wrapping the granitic slopes of the Paaderberg mountains. The mountain range is loaded with potential and since 1998 has quickly become home for many new producers dedicated to Swartland’s progress. Inspired by historic wineries, Adi initially wanted to produce just two wines, a family white and red, but so many plots demanded their own attention and cuvées. The Papegaai Red is a return to that original dream, producing an easy table wine that doesn’t sacrifice quality, combining low-yielding, old bush vines with some top-tier fruit from the farm’s neighbours. Spicy grenache and crunchy cinsault are joined by meaty syrah, plush chenin blanc and salty palomino to ferment together, telling the story of place. Raspberry seed crunch aromas with satisfying sun-baked herbs, and iced floral tea on the first sip. Throw in the cooler and enjoy with bbq meats, veggies and family reunions.
