Marquette, Frontenac Noir & Petite Perle
Leave it to Frederic Simon and Catherine Belanger to create a buzzy, light red in the style of Beaujolais Nouveau a stone’s throw away in the Eastern Townships of Quebec! For the uninitiated, Pinard et Filles is one of Canada’s buzziest and highly-sought-after natural wineries, noteworthy for using rarely-seen hybrid grapes tailor-made for our frigid Nordic climate. Named after the international release of Beaujolais Nouveau celebrated every year in November, Novembre is light, juicy and it’ll stain your lips purple in the most nostalgia-inducing way like a rather-adult Lipsmacker if you’re not careful. With barely-perceptible tannins, it pours a hot Holt Renfrew-magenta in the glass and is texturally not unlike purple lipstick with notes of coronation grape, acai berries, sour cherry & spiced purple popsicle with a soft spritz & low, ripe acid. Treat this glou-glou like a Canadian Lambrusco with salty, snacky things or enjoy by itself with exactly one other person, there simply won’t be enough to go around otherwise.
Finally, the wine equivalent of Alex Colville’s historic 1967 painting, Pacific. From Quebec’s most exciting natural wine project, this blanc de gris possesses the merest suggestion of colour but, as the name implies, is subtly multi-dimensional, tensed between different worlds and much like Colville’s painting, a study in presence & power. Made from the winter-hardy hybrid grape Frontenac Gris and bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphur, Nuance spans the aromatic spectrum — textured & enigmatic with notes of lemon cough drop, almond brittle, white grapefruit, wildflower caramel & white macadamia florals. Where there’s tension, there’s beauty – take a cue from another Colville-inspired piece, Rihanna’s legendary performance in Needed Me and enjoy with like-minded good girls gone bad.
Vin de Jardin is an artful blend of every Frontenac (Noir, Gris & Noir!) that was partially whole cluster fermented to retain some of that juicy fruit character as possible, while a partial foot stomping ensures a gentle extraction of tannins. Some of the grapes were pressed directly into clay amphora vessels to ferment, then bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphites. As we close in on the end of December, we present, the ultimate springtime red with the wherewithal to transcend seasonality all on its own. Tangy and textured, this is a rosé wrapped in a red with notes of pulpy pomegranate, grapefruit oil, buckwheat cranberry tart & orange blossom. As pretty as it is, there’s a wildchild underside that makes this an offbeat yet oddly functional dinner wine, one that’ll leave quite the impression on your guests. Pairs perfectly with romantic walks to the garage & outrageously comfortable leather-bound armchairs.
