An elegantly aromatic, and ruling queen of amber and our nostrils. For the first time in a looong time, welcome back to GW’s Northern California star, Forlorn Hope! Working their sprawling 80-acre, high elevation plot in the Sierra Foothills winemaker Matthew Rorick's focus is on grapes that pay tribute to the state’s eclectic and often unexpected winemaking heritage. From the organic Rorick Heritage Vineyard, with layers of schist over dolomite-rich limestone, the blend of grassy verdelho, waxy albariño, aromatic muscat, and mineral-rich chardonnay are fermented partially destemmed, partially whole cluster and see one daily punchdown to minimize the juice’s oxygen contact and extract hoppy tannins. PLUS! A few experimental additions, including citric vermentino fermented in concrete egg (left sealed and untouched for four months), and more musky muscat fermented carbonically bring the aromatics to stupefying new heights. Golden raisins, pale ale hoppy tannins, twigs tossed in butter & sour grapefruit segments like pawns on a chessboard, with fresh rain puddle, burnt green tea & creeping minerality. Enjoy with jalapeño poppers and tabasco wings.

We’re head over heels for this unbridled & unsulphured Pinot Noir from the Brand Bros, a pair of winemaking brothers at the very northern end of Pfalz, Germany, in the city of Bockenheim. This rare & strangely rich red smoulders like Marlon Brando (Brand Bro?) in all of his charismatic glory, a potent combination of being conventionally attractive – look within & you’ll find the prim & pretty Pinot you’re looking for – with a queer, subversive bent. Farmed from organic vines up to 40 years old, this was aged for 8 months in 500L barrels – called halbstück in Pfalz – and bottled without fining, filtration or added sulphur. Salted florals, musky perfume & scorched earth meet cranberry juice, blueberry lipstick, berry shortbread & a whiff of bacon fat in a show-stopping Almodovar-esque package. Aesthetically along the lines of Billy Idol’s White Wedding and Marc Jacobs’ infamous Grunge collection, it feels like you could somehow drink this in a dive bar and get away with it. Like finding love in a mosh pit, savour within the night.

A vegetal, textural & lifted zero-zero Canadian bubble for explorers of the beyond. Our second instalment from Lieux Communs is here! A small, urban winery in Montreal, they work with vineyards, orchards, and small farms across Quebec and Ontario to create their diverse, lively and ever-changing lineup. Made from a hybrid blend of the aromatic, spiced Es-10-18-14, mineral, white fruited itasca, apricot-y roland (developed in Quebec!) and tropical la crescent, all grown on sandy gravelly soils. A short carbonic maceration is followed by fermentation, then six months on lees in bottle (before disgorging) where it re-fermented and locked in aromatics, texture and MIGHT! FUN FACT! This is the first wine made from their new, early-ripening, frost-resistant hybrid grape varieties that were planted on Guillaume's cousin's small chicken farm in Saint-Eugène-de-Grantham (a cool, flat area near Drummondville) in 2021! Feverish bubbles, jalapeño - no spice, pine resin spiced, fiddleheads, sweet peach iced tea, salty minerality, sumac tannins & ripe gourds. So uniquely delicious, enjoy on the train to Montreal, just in time for Jazz Fest.
