Blaufränkisch & St. Laurent, Burgenland, Austria | Yet another stylish & distinctive red from our beloved winemaking husband & wife duo Alexander & Maria Koppitsch. Grown on the finest limestone soils the Koppitsch’s Burgenland vineyards have to offer, this blend of 70% Blaufränkisch & 30% Saint Laurent is aged on gross lees in barrique for 2 years, giving us lots of woodsy “smoking a pipe in an oxblood leather armchair” vibes. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves— this red still drinks light & fresh, its cooled hot cocoa, grey & red clay and maple wood smoke character are balanced by a pure & precise hit of limestone minerality. Based on the deeper, richer fruit and structure of Blaufränkisch with a bright acid lift and flavours of sour pine needles, fermented grapefruit & bright tomato vine thanks to a sploosh of St. Laurent. The palate brings us handfuls of rinsed black olives, pumpkin patch & ume plum. We recommend pairing this unfined, unfiltered beauty with moonlit tarot card readings (you are guaranteed to draw The Magician), Nietzsche-themed book club meetings, bougie barbecues, & if at all possible, a night in an haunted castle.
Rotburger(Zweigelt), Blaufränkisch & Friends, Burgenland, Austria | Rozsa is a rose for those who like their rose to Taste Like Something. It’s bold, snarky, kind of a badass, but still completely fun & refreshing, like jumping into an ice-cold pool of watermelon rhubarb slushie on a scorching hot day. A blend of Rotburger, Blaufränkisch, St Laurent, Pinot Noir & Syrah, all five grapes are processed in the Koppitsches’ backyard (!), then thrown straight into a screw press in whole bunches without additives. Natural fermentation takes place in fibreglass & stainless steel tanks for pure, bright & unencumbered fruit flavours. We’ve got a little bit of hippie herbalist energy happening here, like some crazy dried berry health tea made by your weird aunt who’s really into crystals. It’s legitimately soul-cleansing! This wine adores a light dinner (chirashi sushi or summery fresh veg), and pairs just as well with the reflection of the sun in a swimming pool, the scent of chlorine, a zebra-striped swimsuit & your fav pair of Adidas.
Chardonnay & Weissburgunder, Burgenland, Austria | Koppitsch’s ‘Perspektive’ wines are meant to be explored as a meditation on terroir; an expression of the rock type, climate & soil of their expressive vineyards, situated at the shores of Lake Neusiedl. This body of water is so intrinsic to the biodynamic winemaking of Alexander & Maria Koppitsch that it shows up on all of their wine labels. In this case, it is dusky, moody and moonlit, which is exactly when, where & how we would love to enjoy this wine. We’re thinking sunset picnic & salty seabreeze on the night of the full moon. A rich & complicated white that you wish you could dive into. Vanilla oat milk, beeswax candle & a limestone minerality so pretty that you want to wear a chunk of it on a pendant. Fruit is fantastically, surprisingly tropical: Dole fruit cup, frozen mango, honeydew bubble tea, beachside creamsicle, poached pear in custard. Luscious mouthfeel from a full year of barrel-aging; unfined, unfiltered, utterly lucid.
Blaufränkisch & Syrah, Burgenland, Austria | The Koppitsches’ “bubbly for all four seasons” rocks its anti-seasonal drinking stance in the most posi possible way, with 4 different season-themed labels to choose from! This way of thinking about wine drinking is all the way up our alley: why shouldn’t we get to enjoy a light & bright pet-nat to wake us up in the middle of snowstormy January? Or in the earliest days of spring to get the party vibe going? We definitely recommend selecting the bottle whose label depicts the season you feel most spiritually connected to. Made from hand-harvested grapes & undergoing single fermentation in bottle without additives, the bottles are disgorged by hand in the very first warm days of spring. This wine is all about good times, good vibes & the best kind of simplicity: raspberry ice pop & fresh strawberries from the farmer's market, mineral zing. Drink in a log cabin or swimming pool or baseball diamond or apple orchard! Anytime anywhere! A wine for all seasons!
Rotburger (Zweigelt) & St. Laurent, Burgenland, Austria | Rét is one of those wines that we come back to time and time again, like a favourite book or movie that is ALWAYS as good as you remember. It is so utterly crushable that you will be tempted to dump the whole bottle into a fountain soda cup & honestly why shouldn’t you? At first it’s all cran-cherry fruit & cola spritz. But upon further inspection, you’ll find it has an equally strong serious streak, like when you find out your wildest, party-est friend secretly as a degree in, like, quantum physics. Earthy, smoky & black peppery, Rét is like the smell of the month of October exploded into a wine. Crackling dried leaves & outdoor firepit, clear & crisp & romantic. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented on the skins for about 10 days without temperature control, then pressed & aged in acacia barrels on gross lees for 14 months. Pairs perfectly with: classic Burberry plaid, an impromptu game of softball that becomes weirdly high-stakes, cool breezes & hand-holding, going for a run with a dog.
Gruner Veltliner, Weissburgunder & Sauvignon Blanc, Burgenland, Austria | A cuddle-puddle of co-fermented white grapes from the clay soils of the vineyard, Homok is the summer white to end all summer whites. Like seriously— if we were going to make a definitive list of our top 10 white wines to drink in a park in the summertime, Homok would be #1, or at least it always FEELS like it is while you’re drinking it. Hazy, textured, unfined & unfiltered, with a sprinkle of natural sediment at the bottom of the bottle (which we recommend using to gauge a first date’s squareness level. If they can’t handle a bit of sediment, they can’t handle YOU). Drinks like complex, alcoholic Fresca with a passionfruit twist. Grilled pineapple, feral mimosa, salty lemonade. Pair with: tunes by 60s girl groups like The Supremes or the Shangri-Las, vintage tennis wear, making a wish on a dandelion seed, pedalling around on one of those swan-shaped pedal boats.
