Saperavi, Kakheti, Georgia
Pheasant’s Tears is the natural wine project of American painter John Wurdeman and 8th-generation winemaker Gela Patalishvili, focusing on traditional Georgian varietals made in traditional clay amphora pots called qvevri. Saperavi is kind of like the Nebbiolo of Georgia, producing a light-ish but powerfully evocative wine with a distinct texture and greenness from clay amphora. Made with organic grapes that spent 9 months in qvevri, one could compare this juicy-meets-savoury savant to Carignan, Mourvedre or even Cab Franc on mescaline. Possibly the deepest & darkest wine we’ve ever poured, stewed blackberry and blackcurrant cordial get cozy with black Italian plums, followed by green vegetal notes and big, meaty tannins. Much like A THERAPY with Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Kingsley, recline on the nearest leather chaise and psychoanalyze your dreams.

Aglianico, Campania, Italy
It’s Cantina Giardino’s world and we simply live in it! Located in the “shin” of Southern Italy, Giardino is located in Irpinia, a gorgeous, high-altitude region with a warm, Mediterranean climate where red and white grapes thrive in equal measure. Fermented on the skins for 3 weeks with another 9 months in chestnut casks, this zero-zero red is thrumming with energy, impatiently tapping its foot waiting to be drunk! Bramble and dark red berries mingle with a savoury, briny quality, vibrant acidity and an acerbic herbaceousness that pulls it all together like butcher twine around a bouquet of wildflowers. Perfect for a warm evening dining al fresco with a carefully curated selection of guests who suffer similarly from main character syndrome.

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo & Trebbiano, Abruzzo, Italy
Davide Gentile and Marco Giuliani’s first vintage in 2010 was such a disaster that they called in an elderly virtuosa to perform a ritual over the grapes, hence the name ‘Lammidia’ (or evil eye, in Abruzzese dialect). It evidently worked because these cloudy, next-to-no sulphur wines are famous in the natural wine world for their incredible texture and energy. This juicy, low-ABV carbonic red is no different, the vintage cranberry-coloured leather jacket you should’ve bought – overripe black cherries, Swedish berries, Italy before Gucci, a whisper of tannin & a yeehaw of barnyard. Finally, a wine for kissing and telling!
