About Us

We are a women owned and operated small business with two locations: our HQ in Toronto's buzzy west end & our downtown outpost in the gorgeous Waterworks Food Hall. Our mission is to make great wine accessible and fun. It’s our goal to create a safe, welcoming work environment for all. We bring an equitable and inclusive lens to our take on hospitality and teamwork. We strive to be Toronto’s premiere bottle shop and natural wine hub & have fun while doing it. Our impact stretches beyond our four walls with a wine club and shipping business across Ontario.

Full Time Shop & Server Role - Waterworks Location

Role Description

Role: Shop & Server

Reports to: Waterworks General Manager

Employment Type: Full Time

Wage Range: $25-28/ hour depending on experience + tips & extended health coverage after 3 months

Position Summary: We are hiring a rare full time position shop & server position at our gorgeous Waterworks location! This role is ideal for a team-oriented, people-person who loves nurturing community and immersing themselves in the world of wine. Bonus points for curiosity of the new and interesting alongside tried and true. Must have 2+ years experience in wine and 2+ years of service in a fast-passed role to confidently speak to a large volume (300+) of constantly rotating wines in our busy bar and shop.

While we are big natural wine people here, it’s not essential for you to be as deeply into it as we are! We’re looking for passion for wine and hospitality with a deep desire to learn. We’ll provide the rest. Even if you don’t have all the requirements we mention, but think you’d shine in this role, we’d still love to hear from you.

Perks:

  • A positive, supportive, and inclusive work environment working on the cutting edge of natural wine.
  • A fun wine job WITHOUT wild hours! Although there may be the occasional special event that runs later, we typically close at 10 or 11 PM, meaning no super late nights.
  • Juicy staff discount on delicious bottles.
  • Comprehensive health benefits.
  • Mentorship and learning opportunities through frequent tastings, winemaker events and collaborations.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Work on the shop floor introducing customers to our incredible producers and bottles.
  • Meet folks where they’re at, helping them find their perfect bottle, while making wine approachable, informative and fun.
  • Serve tables, bar seats and plate simple dishes.
  • Provide warm hospitality, while following systems that allow us to thrive as a team.
  • Help with important back end tasks like stocking and general shop upkeep.

Job Demands and Environment:

• This is a wine retail and service job that requires physicality - you'll always be moving!
• Must be comfortable standing for 8 hours and lifting 30 pounds (one case of wine) multiple times a day each shift.
• We work with an incredible roster of producers and a lot of great wine! This is a pleasure and a responsibility. Self study, curiosity and a passion for learning are key.
• We're a small space and sometimes there is just one person working in shop (though usually a helping hand close by). Must be at ease problem solving and working alone, including at night.
• We talk to a lot of people about wine and about a lot more than just wine! This community is a joy, but takes energy. In these shop shifts you are on. This is best suited for a true people person who enjoys a dynamic environment and is energized by many conversations over 6-8 hours.
• We do a lot of different things at GW and you'll be a big part of our small team! Best suited to a self-starter who enjoys many things happening in a given week and is cool and collected in the flex and flow of retail and service.

Knowledge & Skills:

• A passion for natural wine and small, artisanal producers!
• A love of descriptions beyond the stuffy classic go-tos.
• Open & clear communicator who enjoys working in a collaborative environment.
• Upbeat, warm and enthusiastic.
• Formal sommelier or beverage certifications not required, but nice to have. We have a big list of always changing wines, and our dream candidate has the context to thrive in this space.
Experience working in a wine agency, wine-focussed restaurant or high volume hospitality space — lots of people asking lots of questions! Never a dull moment!

Accomodations Statement:

We highly (and warmly!) encourage folks from communities traditionally underrepresented in wine to apply! If you need accommodations with any part of the interviewing and application process, we’re happy to provide. Let us know what you need.

We are passionately committed to equal opportunity for all employees, increasing diversity at our workplace, and providing team members with a work environment free from discrimination and harassment.

Applications close on March 2nd, and interviews will take place the week of March 9th.

To apply, send us an email at hello@grapewitches.com with your resume and a cover letter letting us know why you'd be the perfect candidate for this role!
