A compelling Beaujolais with age and concentration from one of the region’s most renowned families, you could study this wine like an encyclopedia of all that Gamay has to offer. Founder Joseph Chamonard passed away in 1990, the estate falling to his daughter Geneviève and son-in-law, Jean-Claude Chanudet, one of the founders of the natural wine movement. Together they pursued organic farming and low-intervention winemaking to create pure and delicious wines, a revolution at the time when chemical farming was still the norm, and now their daughter Jeanne carries it forward. Uniquely, the family has always held back vintages til they were perfectly ready to drink; the 2018, with four years age, is ready for launch. This a serious and age-worthy wine with surprising energy and round, velvety tannins that will continue to develop complexity over the next 10-15 years. The ‘Le Clos de Lys’ cuvée is from 4 hectares of massale-selected, high density old vines on the region’s famous granite soil. Grapes are hand picked, before a semi-carbonic maceration and 1 year ageing in large old oak before bottling without fining or filtration. Deep cherry and wild strawberry fruit leather meet smokey incense, crushed rose petals, citrus rind and earth. A powerful, complex beauty.
