“I am very interested in agroforestry…not only is it fascinating to see how vines and trees might live together, but it will also help to improve balance - not just in nature, but economically”. Earth angel & multi-talented winemaker Saskia van der Horst (originally from New York) moved to London to study photography, shortly after which she began working as a sommelier, then swiftly moved into working with natural & biodynamic producers (including revered winemaker Alain Castex). Saskia has been working her 4.5ha (spanning three villages & terroirs) of organically farmed vines in the South of France since 2013. She also has a penchant for old vine plots, which aid in accenting and demonstrating her thoughtfulness & skill. ‘Lou Pal’ is Syrah from 30-60 year old vines on clay-limestone soils which show their influence through gently angular, prickly mineral edges. All Saskia’s reds are semi-carbonically macerated, fermenting takes place in fibreglass and is then aged in old barriques (large wood barrels). Expertly balanced inky fruits, packed density with relieving white-floral high-tones, spicy black pepper, chalky tannins & zappy acidity corralling the rear of the pack. Share with a pal, whether that be a best bud, a love bug, a divine fur being, or you, yourself & only you.
