Jacquère, Savoie, France
What comes before the storm? The calm? A stampede? This delicious wine? For the first time in Ontario, may we bend your ears and take your tongues on a mountainous journey! Camille and Mathieu Apffel work in a zero-zero fashion, with a warm-respect and keen focus on the alluring local white grapes, altesse and jacquère. Their 4.5 hectares are packed with hearty, tenderly cared for ecosystems, a safe haven in the vast expanse of jutting mountain ranges. (not so) FUN FACT! This cuvée is named in remembrance of a day in 2019 when a violent hailstorm ravaged 80% (!!!!!) of their old jacquère vines. The leafy and vibrant jacquère is direct pressed and aged on lees to plump and propel the local grape into demure unforgettability. Underwater cave air, bee pollen, underripe pear juice, yellow kiwi skin, honey thinned butter, chiseled acid like a romantic roman nose bridge, spring water stone skipping, salted yellow dragon fruit & a harmonious consistency that undulates between thick and thin. Enjoy with red snapper ceviche – red onion, blood orange & shaved castelvetrano olive.
Auxerrois, Alsace, France
An off-dry, aromatic and earthy white for the criminally kindhearted. Mathilde and Florian Beck-Hartweg come from a LONG lineage of Alsatian winemakers (try 16th century!) and their wines speak to both a rich past and compelling future. From sandy granite soils surrounded by forest, the perfectly ripe, aromatic auxerrois grapes are gently pressed, aged in old oak with fine lees (think DELUXE texture) for six months, and bottled with eight grams of residual sugar for a palmful of balanced sweetness! Golden complexion, topiary garden, bruised and candied green apple, salty tideland, pine nut, lil melted buttery warmth & an underlying earthy brown bear brown. Excellent with pistachio cannolli, vegetable tarts or the CreAmY St Félicien.
Gros & Petit Manseng, Cahors, France | The brand new ‘Haut Berba’ is a thrilling collaboration that has firmly stolen the prize of fave staff winter white. Jouves worked with Pyrénées vigneron Vincent Maysounave to source Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng, the classic grapes of the Jurançon, planted on clay and limestone soils and biodynamically farmed. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and aged in barrel for one year, and the result is a powerful concentrated white that gives the fruit intensity of the Mansengs with Jouves' signature balance. ‘Haut Berba’ is full, rich, and tension-filled, with candied lemon, quince, apple pie, apricot, and intoxicating sweet spices. If you are a lover of Chenin Blanc and want to try something new, this is the wine for you.
