A Tuscan treasure rich in romance, robust fruit and aged to perfection. Colombaia is an ancient, century-old winery in Colle Val d’Elsa that fourth-generation winemaker Dante Lomazzi and partner Helena together converted to biodynamics. Today they treat their vineyards like one big garden—fruits, vegetables and flowers all grow alongside grapes in an an uber-romantic nurturing of the their land and the surrounding ecosystem. The star of this 2015 reserva is herbaceous, puckering sangiovese (80%), with a blend of smokey colorino, chocolate-covered-berry-esque malvasia nera, and sweetly spiced canaiolo (20%) spliced in to add dimension. Cherry every way (straight off the tree, canned, stewed, and preserved), heartily perfumed, chalk-dust tannins & dampened undergrowth.
