Like being welcomed into an 150-year-old castle, every corner stuffed with decadent textiles and new spectacles around every turn, when suddenly you KNOW you’re home. Domaine des Ardoisières is a small and historical estate practicing biodynamics near the Swiss border. Since 2005, Champagne born winemaker Brice Omont has been capturing the purity of this site, and is now thought of as one of the most exciting producers in France. 65% haunting gamay, 25% tart mondeuse, 10% (exceedingly rare) aromatic persan planted on schist, clay and ardoise (a type of hard, black schist native to the region), which offers a lifted & mineral air. The grapes go through semi-carbonic maceration for 12 days, and are vinified in tanks to accentuate and preserve the expressive aromatics & lifted fruit. Like natty bojo had a baby with Bourgueil cab franc and raised it on the side of a mountain ~ we’d watch that t.v. series! Opening violets, cavernous white pepper, pomegranate powder, walking by an active chimney, thyme sprigs, tense blackcurrant & a rough, salty mineral structure. Drink half from a golden goblet & half from a Zalto, this red deserves the world.
