José Maria Vicente is a third-generation owner & winemaker at Casa Castilla, deep in the hot & arid climate of Jumilla which just happens to be one of the few places completely untouched by the phylloxera, Enemy #1 to grape vines everywhere. Wine has been made here since 1874 when the French were fleeing their own phylloxera-ravaged vineyards & now, the winery has since honed in on the indigenous grape Monastrell (AKA Mourvedre), found here from younger vines in an organic GSM blend typically found in the Rhône but here, coming to you hot & sultry from Spain! Aged for 6-9 months in French and American oak, this is deep, structured & savoury — think blackberry jam, Italian plums, cherry pastille & turned earth with a hint of cowboy brown leather. Pair with rosemary rack of lamb & a pair of Gucci Princetown loafers.
