Like waking up on a deserted Caribbean island. Originally from South Africa, Tom Lubbe and his wife Nathalie along with New Zealand oenologist Sam Harrop began Matassa in 2002. ‘Matassa’ is an old Catalan word that describes a dense forest, fitting as the domaine is surrounded by exactly that, and right at the foot of the Pyrenees! Working with biodynamic practices & as little intervention as possible, these wines sing sweet nothings into the endless void of French wine. FUN FACT! Since the terrain is difficult to access in certain parts, horses are used to help with the cultivation of the soil (Giddy-up!). ‘Marguerite’ is a blend of the ancient Egyptian grape, muscat d’alexandria (33%), the Greek muscat petit grains (34%) & the Spanish macabeu (33%) that come together to create this balanced tropical dream. The average vine age is 50 years and the grapes send 10 days co-macerating before eight months in old French barrels. Pineapple nectar, beach rose, fresh kumquat, Bermuda Triangle & welcomingly textured with a bit of citrus peel bitterness at the end. Pour alongside spicy noodle dishes & Candi Staton’s ‘He Called Me Baby’.
