Gamay, Beaujolais, France
If the name’s unfamiliar, know that Guy Breton is a living legend in Beaujolais, one of the Gang of Four – including Lapierre, Thévenet and Foillard – to popularize natural winemaking principles around the world. Sourced from two parcels handed down by his grandfather (30 and 100 years old!), the grapes come from hills between the Côte de Brouilly and the Côte du Py, around the village of Régnié-Durette. Like many of his wines, the winemaking sounds suspiciously simple but belies incredible results — wild yeasts, whole cluster fermentations, old oak from Romanée-Conti, no fining or filtration. Fresher than the Morgons of his contemporaries, Régnié embraces its luscious, ripe fruit without abandon, lifted and aromatic with slightly unripe cherry, the softest of florals and a clean, fresh finish with a slightly natty twist. Devastating and delightfully casual, pair with miso black cod on celeriac purée, or simply drink on its own (with a spirited decant!) with your dog on the couch.
