Garnacha Tintorera, Mencia, Birezo, Spain
If we had to describe winemaker Diego Losada’s style, it would be somewhere between Black Sabbath & Fern Gully with a smidgen of Kodiak bear roar! La Barbacana is a special vineyard of 100+ year old vines of big n’ juicy Garnacha Tintorera (90%) and Mencía (10%). Unlike other grapes, which have clear flesh, garnacha tintorera aka alicante bouschet has red flesh, which (globally) is a serious rarity. FUN FACT! This vineyard is isolated, deep in the remote southwestern mountains of Birezo, almost in Galicia, next to an old 13th century ruin and an ancient Roman mine! The soils are ripe with quartz, iron, slate, and GOLD just below the surface (motivating the Romans to mine there). Partially destemmed & macerated on the skins in chestnut vats for two-four days, then rested for 10 months in chestnut barrels before bottling without fining, filtering, or any additions – a natty cherub through & through! Red cherry basket, overripe strawberry, the ENTIRE(!) lithosphere’s earthly minerality, delicate lemon thyme, purple heart tomatoes, with dusty leather tannins & paving the road to Oz. Pour alongside 3 am nightmare-wake-ups when your mind & heart are racing and the best remedy is a freaky Spanish tipple.
