How did Napa Valley star, Matthiason, trap every season in this rare, amber-encased elixir? We’ll never know! Working with Flora, a cross between Semillon and Gewurtztraminer developed at UC Davis, reportedly for use in fortified wines, this non-vintage blend of wines made between 2016 and 2020 includes some Muscat de Alexandria and Viognier, two famously aromatic varieties harvested as raisins and aged in barrel for five years. Practically glowing in the glass, think scorched orange peel, crushed cardamom, cinnamon sticks, a touch of clove, warm baking spice and bitter bark with a zesty tickle on the nose. With only 500 cases produced, this fleeting pleasure won’t be here for long – pair with cigarillos in the sunroom on a plush Persian rug.
