Syrah, Muscat Petit Grains, Côtes Catalan, France

A wildly unexpected charmer! Originally from South Africa, Tom Lubbe and his wife Nathalie along with New Zealand oenologist Sam Harrop began Matassa in 2002. ‘Matassa’ is an old Catalan word that describes the thicket of a natural forest, clearly very fitting as the domaine is surrounded by dense forests at the foot of the Pyrenees. Now with 14 hectares of vineyards, most of which are surrounded by Mediterranean bushes, cedars, fig trees & rosemary. Biodynamically cultivated syrah (60%), muscat petit grains (40%), grown on slate and marl soils, with the average vine age of 30 years. Whole cluster maceration for three days before six months spent in concrete melding. Leaping forth at your nose with its teeth bared (thanks to the muscat), pomelo flesh and oils, salt, paprika, bottom of the kalamata jar & wild kiwi curd salsa-ing across the tongue. Absolutely stunning, pour alongside bao & spicy chicken wings!
