Cabernet Franc, Loire Valley, France
A precise, pretty and personable zero-zero Loire cab franc to please any taste. A serious producer to know in the natural wine world, Germain was the first winemaker to farm biodynamically in Saumur-Champigny, a testament to the dedication and incredible craftsmanship on display throughout their entire library. The grapes are picked from a variety of vines aged 5-70 years, all of which are rooted in tuffeau limestone (formed from compressed marine sediments and fossils) and sandy-clay around Varrains (southeast of Saumur). Fermented in stainless steel to retain every morsel of itself, the cab is then aged briefly on lees between tanks and wood barrels for a gentle softening. Fresh, stippling florality, buoyant acidity, raspberry puree, pronounced graphite, wild blackberries, cabin in the woods & earthen minerality. Enjoy alongside open fire places, falling-off-the-bone dishes and loyal dogs.
Nebbiolo, Lombardia, Italy
A mountainously welcome distraction from whatever’s been on your mind lately. Arpepe is owned and operated by a family of winegrowers, who, for over 150 years have been passionately devoted to the cultivation of the delicately-robust nebbiolo grape. From vines more than fifty years old planted over granite, fruit is sourced from around 350-400 metres above sea level – adding to the distinct alpine characteristics we hold so dearly. The grapes undergo a long, gentle maceration of two months in tini (vats) to extract these tree-trunk-tannins. Orange-tinted, violet and rose perfume, crushed graphite, giant cherry, whole clove, sandalwood oil, torn leather, plum jam & tamed acidity. Pour alongside a fire grilled steak or your fave cheeseburger.
Xinomavro, Naoussa, Greece
This is a wine you can fall into like falling into bed at the end of a long day. A big fat glass feels like an accomplishment, like finishing a long run or reading a hard book. Aged for 14-18 months in old oak, it’s cozy & rich, big but not in an obnoxious frat boy Napa Cab way, just the perfect amount of rainy day heft like hugging a chocolate Lab. Black forest cake, cherry cream & dark chocolate but also just straight-up forest vibes, Mediterranean brush & black olive, spicy aftertaste of cinnamon & pepper. Pairs brilliantly with everything classically Greek: lamb on the spit, rich creamy cheese & hella oregano.
