A racing night ride through the eye-popping cliffs of France! Deep cherry motorcycle! Beat-up driving gloves! No seatbelts! Rosemary burning on the breeze! And maybe an old-timey demon waiting around every corner! All of this to say: the cult-status, always zero-zero wines of natural Jean-Yves Péron, who works in the steep, unruly alpine hills of Savoie, are a wild trip and ‘Côte Pelée’ – his robust & herbaceous mondeuse noire – arrives full of gothic bad-boy attitude. Organic, biodynamic & hand-harvested, the grapes come from a range of vines that are 30 to 100 years old (that’s OLD!) and see some of the longest maceration times of all Jean-Yves’ cuvees. They’re aged for about three years in old, neutral barrels. In this case, that gives this restless character a chance to meld & mellow out. Let the beast out of the bottle and get heel-stomped blackberry, aggro raspberry, eucalyptus shower, flowering weeds, raven-shaped pepper shaker, boozed-up bonbons, feral horse pack, drawing the ace of swords, deviantart & the complete poems of anne sexton. Pour alongside wild elk sliders to match this most brazen grape brew.
