Chiavennasca AKA Nebbiolo, Lombardia, Italy

Up near the tippy top of Italy near the Swiss Alps is the mountainous region of Valtellina, where the Pelizzati family has been making Nebbiolo for five generations, no biggie! And naturally, nice things take time to make (and perfect!), so the winemaking leans traditional with extra long fermentations, resulting in the prettiest red pearl of a wine you’ve ever seen. Farmed from 50-100 year old vines at altitude, the grapes undergo a 69 day maceration in wooden vats (nice!) and are aged for 5 months in barrel and concrete. Resembles the finest Burgundies in structure but very much a singular, alpine beauty – rust-toned, cherry stem, crimson flowers, spice sachet, shooting star acidity & leather belt tannins. A highly allocated treasure, beloved the world over, to be chilled slightly, decanted & paired with Quincy Jones, furry white rugs and a roaring fireplace.
