Pinot D’Auvergne, Chardonnay, Auvergne, France
Cailloux translates to, “a small, usually smooth stone. eg. Small pebbles on the beach”, which makes us wonder, is this where the Canadian TV classic “Caillou” drew inspiration from, as Caillou’s shiny bald head looks like a small, round pebble? Charmingly genuine, winemakers Patrick Bouju and Justine Loiseau are adored the world over for their passion-fuelled cuvées. Together bringing renewed interest to Auvergne, a southeast region of the Loire Valley on the volcanic Massif Central. ‘Cailloux’ is their top red, from very old, biodynamically cared for vines (up to 120 years!) on a small, eroded volcanic peak near the commune of Cournon. The partially destemmed pinot d’auvergne (90%) sees one week of semi-carbonic maceration before being blended with a very small amount (10%) of direct-pressed chardonnay and aged together for 13 months between old barrels and mellowing sandstone amphorae. Umami city, smoked salt, plum sap, herbs growing between rocks, immense concentration & the promise of a bright future. Recommended with food, more specifically anything braised.
