Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux, France

An aromatic, greedy and graceful light red for wistful weekday sipping. Originally a farm founded in 1855, the Carteyron family’s property was divided between nectarines, peaches and grapes, before bottling their first vintage as Château Penin in 1964. Today, oenologist and viticulture advisor Patrick Carteyron works as the fifth generation managing the family’s 50 hectare estate. A blend of dark, rich and fruity merlot (90%) and spiced cabernet sauvignon (10%) plucked from alluvial-clay soils, sees a 24-60 hour maceration for this delicate colour, then four months on fine lees to become its light spicy self. Clairet refers to a fresher historic style of Bordeaux this wine perfectly encapsulates. Flattering comments, crunchy, tangy cherry and fleshy, cold strawberries, raw rhubarb acidity, soft spices & a deliciousness thickness like chomping through layers of felted wool. Enjoy with a ratatouille inspired pasta sauce, eggplant, zucchini, peppers and tomatoes.
