Grolleau, Loire Valley, France | An eminently drinkable, ultra-fresh red from Émeline Calvez and Sébastien Bobinet of the newly-renamed Calvez-Bobinet, a beloved 8th generation natural winery in Saumur. Piak! brings a real Comic Sans energy to the low-profile Loire grape Grolleau, disparaged in the past but like QR codes in 2020, is back with a vengeance and something to prove! Parched throats, beware – this light, juicy & slightly spicy red is coming for you! The grapes were split into two tanks – destemmed in one, whole bunches in the other – and fermented for 10 days, then blended and aged for another few months before bottling without fining or filtration. Tastes like mulberries and blackcurrant jelly, cherry pit, blackberry seed and crabapple with a sprig of mint, a crack of white pepper and hardly any tannins. So dang refreshing! Pair with night walks on the train tracks, burgers & a trenchcoat with nothing underneath.

Dornfelder, Pfalz, Germany | If you remember Violet from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you’ll remember her as the rude, brash girl (we relate!) who unwisely decides to eat Willy Wonka’s “three-course dinner” gum – pea soup, roast beef & blueberry ice cream, all in one! – which inflates her into a giant, blue-faced blueberry. When the Oompa Loompas rolled her off to the juicing room, this must’ve been what they extracted – a wildly juicy & Willy Wonka purple wine that’s a touch vegetal, a bit meaty and has a whiff of blueberry ice cream! Blame it on the Brand Bros, a pair of fifth-generation winemakers working out of the northern end of Pfalz, Germany. Sourced from 60 year old vines on a prized limestone plot and named after Flora, the horse who worked said plot, a variety of techniques – extended open-top fermentation, carbonic maceration, throwing some of last years’s vintage in – come together to create an entire Aesop’s Fable’s worth of feelings and fantasy, all without fining, filtration or added sulphites. Welch’s grape juice meets coronation grape jelly, jasmine flower, Italian plums, wet cobblestones & charcuterie board (board included!) with soft, ripe tannins and a funky floral kick. Might just slap a big silly Cheshire Cat grin on your face.

Duras, Gaillac, France | Contre-Pied feels like the perfect first date, a juicy, pungent red from Southwest France with charm aplenty and a very eldest child sort of rebellious streak. From one of the oldest winemaking families in Gaillac, ’Contre-Pied’ means the ‘wrong direction,’ an allusion to this twist on local grape Duras, given a very Beaujolais-inspired treatment featuring ripe, macerated fruit & heady, intoxicating florals. Sourced from organic neighbours, the grapes underwent a carbonic ferment in barrel and were aged for 7-8 months, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Ripe cherry, pomegranate cocktail & blackberry pavlova are followed by spicy black pepper, bruised herbs & the inside of someone’s old leather jacket. Plump tannins and a bright, balanced acid round out this confident, even irreverent red who would never shy away from liking a year-old Instagram pic of you looking hot.
