Chardonnay, Beaujolais France
Beaujolais Blancs are not exactly a dime a dozen, but they’re such a cute little wine nerd niche. The Beaujolais region is located just south of fancypants Bourgogne, & white Beaujo— always made from 100% Chardonnay, just like in Bourgogne—drinks like Burgundy’s breezy younger sibling who takes a laissez-faire approach to all aspects of life (except for FUN, which they take extremely seriously.) Séléné winemaker Sylvère Trichard produces only a small amount of this highly coveted white, which is so freaking delicious that we do really want to hoard it all for ourselves, but won’t, because we love you. This is a savoury & textural Chard— all of Trichard’s wines are rooted in a distinctly punk rock spirit, but this Beaujolais Blanc’s innate rebelliousness is tempered by an intellectual, avant-garde backbone. Amply acidic, with an intriguing, savoury creamy note that reminds us of a hunk of sharp cheddar on a slice of cinnamony apple pie, which incidentally it would also pair very well with! Notes of beeswax, lemon curd & cool granite; this wine is effortless yet thought-provoking, like a casually-snapped candid photograph that turns out to be a work of genius.
Chenin Blanc, Loire Valley, France
The secret’s out! This all-star white from Eméline Calvez and Sébastien Bobinet has become a cult favourite among wine lovers everywhere, and for good reason. That laser beam acidity, that crunchy limestone minerality, the cutest bunny anyone ever did see – this club truly has everything and we never want to leave. Picked two weeks earlier than their more opulent Chenin, Les Gruches, this is the young, hot & fresh side of Chenin with 14K followers on Instagram and a penchant for spending time in the countryside in a not-annoying way. Spending 6 months on the lees in old barrel, this has a distinct crunchy, mineral undertone and is just utterly delicious. Dandelion lemonade, lime leaf, lemon San Pellegrino, almost-ripe pear, apple frangipane tart, Swarovski crystal minerality & brilliant disco ball acidity that just lights up our world. Serve with sunshine and edible flowers the next time you have Joni Mitchell over for dinner.
Jacquère, Savoie, France
What comes before the storm? The calm? A stampede? This delicious wine? May we bend your ears and take your tongues on a mountainous journey! Camille and Mathieu Apffel work in a zero-zero fashion, with a warm-respect and keen focus on the alluring local white grapes, altesse and jacquère. Their 4.5 hectares are packed with hearty, tenderly cared for ecosystems, a safe haven in the vast expanse of jutting mountain ranges. (not so) FUN FACT! This cuvée is named in remembrance of a day in 2019 when a violent hailstorm ravaged 80% (!!!!!) of their old jacquère vines. The leafy and vibrant jacquère is direct pressed and aged on lees to plump and propel the local grape into demure unforgettability. Morning air after the storm, frosty grass, daisies and bee pollen, underripe pear juice, honey thinned butter, chiseled acid like a romantic roman nose bridge, stone skipping, yellow kiwi skin salted into forever & a harmonious consistency that undulates between thick and thin. Enjoy with red snapper ceviche – red onion, blood orange & shaved castelvetrano olive.
