Frontenac Blanc, Vineland, Ontario
A spiced, textured and earthen Ontario hybrid white, as delicious as it is WILDLY complex. If you haven’t heard of or tasted anything from Bon Sang! yet, where have you been?! JK, welcome to the party. Bon Sang! are a tiny local producer making delicious, guzzle-able, and low intervention wine out of underrepresented hybrid and regional grapes sourced from responsible growers across Ontario. The fruity, citric and concentrated frontenac blanc for ‘Saulé’ was three week, open-air skin macerated, then aged on lees in stainless steel for seven months picking up a plushy fullness. Nectarines on yoghurt, a bundle of flowers, finger-paints, whole lemon, pinch of salt, fossils trapped in amber, dirt, lilypads, the old wardrobe from the lion the witch and wardrobe, watermelon rind & turmeric spiced oatmeal. Enjoy alongside reading anything by Ontario-born legend, Margaret Atwood.
Grüner Veltliner, Weissburgunder & Sauvignon Blanc, Burgenland, Austria
A cuddle-puddle of co-fermented white grapes from the clay soils of the vineyard, Homok is the summer white to end all summer whites. Like seriously— if we were going to make a definitive list of our top 10 white wines to drink in a park in the summertime, Homok would be #1, or at least it always FEELS like it is while you’re drinking it. Hazy, textured, unfined & unfiltered, with a sprinkle of natural sediment at the bottom of the bottle (which we recommend using to gauge a first date’s squareness level. If they can’t handle a bit of sediment, they can’t handle YOU). Drinks like complex, alcoholic Fresca with a passionfruit twist, grilled pineapple, feral mimosa, fall honey, lanolin fullness, tangerine jolt & salty lemonade. Pair with: tunes by 60s girl groups like The Supremes or the Shangri-Las, vintage tennis wear, making a wish on a dandelion seed, pedalling around on one of those swan-shaped pedal boats.
Regent, St. Laurent, Pinotin, Portugieser, Dornfelder, Nahe, Germany
A shimmering, crispy German red blend like the very first ray of morning light was speared right through it. Working in the town of Nahe, between the prestigious Rhine and Mosel valleys, sixth generation winemakers and siblings, Pauline and Carl are bottling their own unique view of the region. ‘Rays of Red’ is their ‘Rot’ rebranded in celebration of a particularly FRUITFUL year in Nahe (SAD FACT, in 2023 almost all of their red grapes were lost to the vinegar fly). The destemmed, floral, spiced dornfelder, dark-berried regent (hybrid) and pinot noir-esque pinotin (hybrid) all macerated for six days, while the earthy st. laurent macerated whole cluster for 14 days, and the red-berried portugieser was direct pressed for a lifted but tactile combo. FUN FACT! Pinotin is a hybrid variety developed in 1991, and a new grape for Pauline and Carl #trynewthings #hybridsforver, and it’s parental lineage includes cabernet sauvignon, riesling & silvaner! Cranberry, salt shake, moving glacier, cola gummy, herb breeze, rain on suede patterned tannins & a red ring pop aftertaste. Enjoy while picking up oil pastels for the first time since high school art class.
