Koumarino, Mavro Potamisi & Kondoura, Tinos, Greece | No longer are we smuggling bottles of Kalathas in our suitcases! Jérôme Binda makes a tiny (but growing!) amount of wine from the tiny Aegean island of Tinos, Greece. Working with ancient, own-rooted vines up to 250 years old, his wines have incredible vivacity and are amongst the most coveted wines in the world, testaments to the singular energy only old vines can impart. ‘‘To Kokkinaki’ means ‘the little red,’ a musky, high-octane rosé that speaks to sun, soil & earth that reminds us an awful lot of some of our favourite light reds with an opulent texture and a distinct, herbaceous edge – the choice is not yours because we’re defying labels here! Smushed raspberries in the sun meet fallen apples, raspberry leaf, white tea, crabapple & dried sage. Pair with chunky necklaces, Tabis & a black muumuu dress like the esteemed patron(izer) of the arts you are.
Aspro Potamisi, Tinos, Greece | Jérôme Binda is working with some of the oldest vines in the world (some up to 250 years old!) on the Aegean island of Tinos, Greece. Only ancient, crawling bush vines – that is, grown without training – could produce such a deeply wise and powerful white wine with such an intense saffron hue and fresh acid. ‘10+12’ is new to Ontario and refers to a 2015 blend of Vat 10 with Vat 12, early Aspro Potamisi with late Aspro Potamisi – the name clearly stuck. Savoury and slightly salty with notes of preserved & fermented lemon, macadamia, apricot fuzz, wildflower honey, ginger chew, barrel toast and a touch of peat. Take a bit of Saint Tropez, a touch of Miami and a healthy dose of Greek charm and you get this, an entire sabbatical in a bottle.
