This is NOT your dusty, straw basket-lined bottle of classic Chianti. It is, however, still Sangiovese, the variety most often found in Chianti from Tuscany, but done in a lighter, fresher style - carbonic maceration (whole-berry ferment as found in Beaujolais) in a 2400L wooden oval, then aged in stainless steel to retain its fruit. It is, however, still Sangiovese, the variety most often found in Chianti from Tuscany, but done in a lighter, fresher style - carbonic maceration (whole-berry ferment as found in Beaujolais) in a 2400L wooden oval, then aged in stainless steel to retain its fruit. It has all the telltale energy of wines made by Anton Van Klopper of Lucy Margaux Farm (or Lucy M.), one of Australia’s most cult natural wine figures. As with many other wine regions in the world experiencing the effects of climate change, Australia is home to a ton of interesting grapes other than your typical/ international superstars like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, etc. Italian grapes like Sangiovese can really thrive in the high-altitude hills of South Australia’s Basket Range. Like its name, this vino is molta fresco - vibrant boysenberry, blood plums, raspberry, and morello cherries. The soundtrack for this glou-glou banger is more Italo-Disco rather than Best-of-Trattoria.
