Often considered only worthy of basic house wines, when treated with care, it can be just as textural and complex as those made further north in southern Austria. In fact, this grape shows how deeply connected wine growing in Serbia is to the wider Pannonian basin, which covers much of Hungary, as well as parts of southeastern Austria and southwest Slovakia. Oszkár Maurer’s wine-making family dates back 4 generations and his ultimate goal is to steward the wine-growing history in this area by focusing on regional grapes with a natural approach. The ‘Fodor’ is 100% Olaszrisling from 56-year-old vines inherited from Oszkár’s great grandmother’s family that border the Szelevényi nature reserve by only a 3-meter wide road. The finished wine, with 5 days of skin contact to give it some heft, is very much influenced by the life in the nearby nature reserve. Full concentration, forested freshness, and tropical punch.
