Nielluccio (Sangiovese), Corsica, France
That easy-going cousin that keeps to themselves during family gatherings, but when you sit down with them they gush with all the interesting thoughts and ideas rolling around in their sweet lil noggins. Fresh-faced winemaker Nicolas left the world of law, and moved back to the island of Corsica with determination to do justice to the grapes of his homeland. From 10-50 year old Nielluccio or Sangiovese vines (in conversion to organic farming) are grown in rich, clay-limestone soils adding supportive minerality to this medium bodied red. Destemmed and cold-soaked for 48 hours in concrete eggs, then fermented and left to sit in the same vessel for the next two years. An intense ruby with spicy florals, blackberry mash, aniseed and supple, velvety tannins. Enjoy with your grandma and a dessert course composed of her freshly made chocolate cake doughnuts with dark chocolate icing.
