Exclusive to Grape Witches! The Scholium Project is perhaps the very definition of “cult wine,” made by former philosophy professor turned philosopher winemaker, Abe Schoener. The wines are idiosyncratic & experimental, part of the New California wave winemakers embracing all-natural fermentation, light extractions and minimal sulphur usage. Consider this Cinsault by way of Volnay, the iconic Burgundian sub-appellation known for powerfully perfumed & aromatic Pinot Noir, dark & robust with the lightest possible extraction. From 140-year-old vines from the Bechtold Ranch, this was whole-cluster fermented and left alone (without punch-downs or pour-overs) for four weeks, followed by 12 months in neutral oak. Abe considers this cuvée the very pinnacle of this wine, featherweight and lithe, bold and balanced with blackcurrant, savoury portobello umami, clove-adjacent spice & a puff of smoked cedar. Now in its final year, the incredible wines of this project won’t be around for much longer!
